On a daily basis, the physician makes and announces diagnoses of illness to the people he or she accompanies in the short or long term. What about the announcement to the person whose chronic disease is diabetes? The purpose of this research was to explore the circumstances and implications of announcing the diagnosis of diabetes to those directly affected. The main objective was to identify patterns explaining diversity and reactions to the announcement.

The announcement is not intended to be an outcome, but rather as the beginning of a process whereby the individual can mobilize all of his or her resources to develop strategies to deal with potential identity tensions.
