Objectives

A therapeutic patient education program about drugs was rolled out in a mental health hospital for schizophrenic patients. It is important to assess its impact on their knowledge, skills, and experience of drug treatment.

Methods

A study was conducted using data collected from twenty schizophrenic patients who had benefited from this therapeutic patient education program. Several fields were assessed and evaluated: knowledge of the disease, knowledge of the treatment, identification of therapeutic benefits, identification of side effects, experience of the treatment, and autonomy in taking the treatment. A comparison before and after the program was carried out.

Results

After the therapeutic patient education program, our analysis reveals a significant difference in several of the fields evaluated. The identification of side effects was the area showing the greatest improvement for patients.

Conclusion

This retrospective analysis demonstrates the interest of a structured, multi-professional therapeutic education approach for schizophrenic patients. This is an interesting and promising approach in schizophrenia’s healthcare provision.
