This news is based on the following article: Bosco L, Notari T, Ruvolo G, et al. Sperm DNA fragmentation: an early and reliable marker of air pollution. Environ Tox Pharmacol 2018 ; 58 : 243-9. doi : 10.1016/j.etap.2018.02.001
This small-scale study compared groups of inhabitants of two regions in Italy exposed to pollution from specific sources to control groups. The results showed little difference in sperm characteristics. However, the significantly higher level of sperm DNA fragmentation among men living in polluted areas suggests that it is a useful marker of exposure to harmful environmental contaminants.
