(1) The pathophysiology of PPR is thought to involve altered excitability of the visual pathways and regions of the occipital cortex in response to underlying genetic factors and flickering light. Also, patients with PPR may exhibit occipital hyperexcitability.

 

(2) Local hyperexcitability in the cortex and some structural abnormalities in the brain, as shown using voxel-MRI.

 

(3) The common pathway appears to involve a GABAergic mechanism..
