Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a well known vascular risk factor. In elderly people, it is associated with an increase risk of dementia not only of vascular dementia but also of Alzheimer disease or mixte dementia. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive impairment without dementia. The origin is probably multifactorial and not only due to vascular lesions. In the elderly, cognitive evaluation is necessary during type 2 diabetes. The consequences of cognitive impairment are important not only for the treatment observance but also to organize non medical treatment like cognitive rehabilitation.
