Practice and critique of evidence-based medicine.Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is defined as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients”. It cannot be reduced to the non critical use of the recommendations it gives rise to. The EBM decision procedure is described and the limits and risks of EBM, perceived as justifying an institutional monitoring of practice, are presented.
