A first episode of acute ileitis is defined by the occurrence of an evocative, inaugural, clinical picture associated with a modification of the terminal ileum in imaging. Several causes are seen including infectious, inflammatory, tumoral, drug or vascular origin, the infectious origin remaining the most common. After a first episode, a 2nd clinical evaluation is recommended. Investigations will usually be necessary if an isolated non-infectious cause is suspected. Crohn's disease remains a prime hypothesis in case of acute ileitis.
