Low or non adherence is a problem of concern in patients suffering from chronic illness, particularly in inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Nevertheless, a high level of adherence is a primary goal to obtain remission and to prevent relapses or complications. This review summarizes the available literature on frequency, predictors, clinical consequences and strategies for improving medication adherence in inflammatory bowel diseases.
