Liver plays a central role in nutritional metabolism. In cirrhosis, this metabolism is modified with a reduction in synthesis and metabolic transformation as well as a permanent state of hypercatabolism. Malnutrition is common in cirrhotic patients, and it is a major prognostic marker of mortality and morbidity, especially in patients on transplant waiting list. However, in clinical practice, nutritional status is very difficult to assess by conventional markers. Nutritional management should be one of the first objectives for these patients.
