The dissemination of circulating tumor cells (CTC) is one step of the metastatic process. The recent development of several techniques allowed detecting these cells in patients, generating many results obtained through heterogeneous isolation techniques in small cohorts. We review here the detection results and their clinical consequences in esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal and liver carcinomas, and discuss their possible applications as new biomarkers.
