Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-known vascular risk factor. In elderly people, it is associated with an increased risk of dementia, not only vascular dementia but also Alzheimer disease as well as mixed dementia. Type 2 DM may be associated with cognitive impairment without necessarily fulfilling current criteria for dementia. The origin is probably multifactorial and not only due to vascular lesions. In the elderly, cognitive assessment is necessary in case of type 2 DM. The consequences of cognitive impairment are important not only in term of treatment observance but also for the non-medical management like cognitive rehabilitation.
