Radionuclides may contribute to the chronic risks that affect humans and their environment. Risk assessment can be based only upon a predictive system that includes every phenomenon likely to have a significant influence. This vast task requires studying the specific effects of chronicity, of simultaneous and multiple sources of pollution, and more generally of ecosystem functioning. It requires competence in fields ranging from molecular biology to ecology. IRSN (Institut de radioprotection et de sûreté nucléaire), as a stake‐holder in the development of regulatory and monitoring activity, has launched research in these areas.
