Desertification in the Near East is not due to a gradual climatic change to wards a more arid regime. It is more related to the unsound management and use of natural resources (vegetation, soil and water) in a fragile arid and subarid environment. Uncontrolled forest cutting, overgrazing, mismanagement of irrigated lands, misuse of hillsides, steppe cultivation, excessive use of underground water, etc. have played an important role in triggering off the desertification processes. The ecological approach is the best and the most efficient way of combating desertification and regenerating desertified zones.
