The aim of the present review is to summarize the state of the large-scale studies of genes and/or proteins expression in the spermatozoa and seminal plasma, from spermatogenesis to the maturation and capacitation of the sperm cell. In such a context, we shall review the advantages and limits of transcriptomics and proteomics. As a conclusion, the concept of systems biology integrating data from genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, as well as biocomputing and modelling, will be discussed. Indeed, new research options based on integrative genomics open important perspectives that should help us better understanding the biology of the male gamete but should also provide new answers for the treatment of the male infertilities.
