Fracture of the fibular sesamoid bone: case report and literature review Volume 27, issue 2, Juin 2011

Authors

Fractures of the sesamoid bones of the foot are rare. Injuries to the fibular sesamoid are less compared to the tibial. The mechanism of trauma may be direct or indirect. We report the case of a fracture of fibular sesamoid secondary to indirect trauma by forced hyperextension of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux. Through this observation and a review of the literature, anatomy and biomechanics of the sesamoid bones will be recalled as the mechanism and modalities of diagnosis and treatment of sesamoid fractures are discussed.
