Phentolamine is used in emergency arterial hypertensive cases after extracorporal circulation. This -adrenergic blocking agent is not officially recommended for this use in France. Its prescription requires a nominative temporary autorisation of use (ATU) given by the French Drug Administration (Agence du médicament). This procedure is very heavy and not in accordance with such emergency situations. During 9 months, pharmacists have been involved in the survey of phentolamine therapeutic uses in the division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at Laennec Hospital. The ATU is now systematically and rapidly given by the French Drug Administration, provided a clinical reports completed by the anaesthesists doctors has been previously submitted.
