Review of accidental professional blood exposures in North Hospital Volume 18, issue 1, Mars 1999

Participation of the hospital pharmacist in the prevention of accidental blood exposures (ABE) is becoming more and more important : handling, delivering and good using of antiretroviral drugs. Since 6 months, in North Hospital of Marseille, a total of 43 ABE were reported and analysed : nurses are injured in 61 % ABE ; ABE are more occured in 80 % for emergency units : the commonest accident was needle stick injuries 39, bites 2 and eye contaminations 2. 41 ABE required tritherapy and 2 bitherapy, patients were treated during one month.
