During the EPP (Evaluation of the Professional practices) entitled “Oral Care in Psychiatry”, the teams of the Psychiatric Hospital of Gers reflected about oral and prosthetic hygiene protocols based on the audit performed with the medical teams and the oral status of patients hospitalized for a long period of time. This article aims to present the thinking of the nursing staff, and then the details of each protocol. The first point of consideration included defining oral care : objectives, care elements to be considered, and frequency. The second point specifically concerned the patient : psychic or physical disability, susceptibility to hygienic care, and cooperation during the oral care. These two essential points permitted to propose a method of caregiving and the adapted patient protocols.
