Over the past 200 years there have been many attempts to come to terms with clinical situations in which a clear cut case for psychosis is difficult to make. Clinical cases are presented with a clinical consideration of structure and clinical signs. We propose a provisional definition of the schizoid position and simple melancholia based on the sense of the impossible, the nature of being, the mirror sign and Chaslin's notion of discordance.
