Bipolar disorders: cognitive and emotional pathology. In a dimensional perspective, the exploration of cognitive and emotional alterations in bipolar disorder questions the classical definition of this psychiatric disease. Persistent deficits in cognitive functioning between acute phases suggest that euthymia is actually not a symptom-free period. Moreover, inappropriate emotional feelings and abnormalities in the identification of emotions could contribute to the symptomatology. Interactions between cognitive and emotional disorders are accounted for by functional cortico-subcortical alterations. Optimizing cognitive and emotional processes in bipolar patients should be a main objective of treatment.
