For several years now, the use of physical restraint in psychiatry has incited feelings and remains highly controversial. Statements, regulations and recommendations appear one after the other to limit the use of restraint but they also seem to ignore the care dimension of this procedure. The purpose of this article is to focus on the clinical indications and the therapeutic function of physical restraint, with regard to our clinical practice in the Unit for Difficult Illnesses. The question of patient's experience of restraint and caregivers will also be considered. Finally, the importance of the development of patient caregiver interaction and dedicated training will be emphasized.
