Internet-addiction is a complex concept and its understanding involves several pitfalls. It is essential to take into consideration the dimension of a basic dependence on technology, which is intended to compensate for the limitations of the human being by responding directly to pre-existing needs. Even if progress transforms the human being, in particular by the important impact of the environment in its cognitive and psychic construction, addiction or dependence is not a new phenomenon and we have an interest to look at the human and its singular relationship to an object before seeking the cause in the object alone of the addiction. We illustrate this via a clinical case of a teenager with an addictive relationship to virtual worlds.
