Neurodegenerative disorders in adults and neurodegenerative disorders occuring in adults are progressively recognized as one of the major causes of epilepsy. Improved health care, resulting in increased longevity, will unavoidably lead to an increase of epilepsy cases in the elderly. For example, in Alzheimer’s disease, almost 10% of the patients present with seizures, eventually necessitating an antiepileptic treatment. We review available data on epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of the epilepsies when associated with major neurodegenerative disorders. The need for prospective, controlled studies is obvious.
