Pirfenidone is a novel antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory drug used for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It has been approved for use in Europe and the USA for IPF under the trade name Esbriet® (in Korea: Pirespa®). Pirfenidone is believed to reduce fibroblast proliferation, regulate transforming growth factor-β-stimulated collagen production, and reduce the production of fibrogenic mediators [1, 2].
