Crusted scabies is a rare, highly contagious infection caused by massive infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Patients with a weakened immune system are particularly affected by crusted scabies, as an inadequate host response and subsequent unrestrained growth of parasitic mites play a key pathogenetic role.
