The risk of contamination by viruses transmissible through organ, tissue or cell transplantation is to be taken into account in the clinical and biological selection of donors. This risk must be prevented through a rigorous policy of safety with regards to known viruses and a prospective vigilance on viral agents being identified or already identified. This review presents successively the preventive strategies of the risk of viral contamination based on the selection of organ, tissue or cell donors ; the prevalences of viral markers systematically screened in French organ donors ; the residual viral risk of organ transplantation ; the possibilities of reinforcement of the prevention of the viral risk linked to the organ, tissue or cell transplantation ; furthermore, the vigilance with regards to viral agents identified but less pathogenic and newly identified viral agents.
