Since the discovery of the AIDS virus, retroviruses have enjoyed a renewed interest by the scientific community. Foamy viruses, the third subgroup of the family of exogenous retroviruses, have been thought to be innocuous in vivo and hence attention was transfered to pathogenic retroviruses. However, recent fascinating findings on foamy viruses bring new important biological aspects of general interest for the field of retrovirology.
