Hepatitis delta virus, a human pathogen can be considered as a satellite RNA or a defective virus in that it requires envelope proteins from coinfecting hepatitis B virus to assemble an infectious particle. Surprisingly, its genome displays a structure similar to that of plant viroids and shares with the latter a replication strategy involving a rolling-circle process. For these reasons HDV has emerged as a novel entity among animal viruses.
