This paper studies the contribution of the object-oriented analysis of Landsat ETM+ imagery for mapping heterogeneous forest space in the Senalba Chergui forest (Djelfa - Saharan Atlas, Algeria). The results show that classification using the k nearest neighbours method makes it possible to simplify the floristic and structural heterogeneity of the ground truth. It also makes it possible to conserve the needed information about land cover types including various Aleppo pine stands (dense and compact, dense and fragmented, clear), high Juniper and oak shrub-lands, rosemary low shrubs-lands and herbaceous. Finally, the survey shows that the structural heterogeneity of the forest formations in semi-arid zones offers a good opportunity to integrate landscape approaches, particularly during the analysis stage of the forest planning process.
