The need for pain management in newborns is universally admitted but difficult in daily practice for multiple reasons : difficulty of pain assesment, lack of pharmacological and clinical data on commonly used treatments, risks for adverse effects related to drugs and potential toxicity. Endotracheal intubation is frequently performed in the NICU and current recommandations state that an analgesia and/or sedation should be provided for all intubations excepting life-threatening situations. Although no current « gold standard » is consensual the combination of a short acting opioid and a muscle-blocker appears as a safe and efficient solution. Alternative treatments, such as sedatives, are sometimes appropriate.
