Invasive pneumococcal disease was the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) who can develop also severe infections due to others encapsulated bacteria. Newborn screening enables early identification to ensure that affected babies receive appropriate immunization and penicillin prophylaxis. Children are recommended to receive four doses of PVC13 between 2 and 11 months of age following by a PPCV23 at age 2 years, a single revaccination with PPSV23 is recommended 5 years after the first dose. Our latest immunization schedule recommends to initiate vaccination against meningococcal C as soon as five months of age for all babies. Children with SCD must be protected against the other serogroups of meningococcus (B, AWY): a quadrivalent conjugate meningococcal ACYW vaccine could be administred as early as age 6 weeks. The new immunization program is now complex, needs repeated consultations but necessary. It very important to catch-up immunization in older children and travellers. Vaccine are safe and efficacy for children with SCD. Further research and studies will inform optimization of vaccination and booster schedules.
