The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of type II diabetes and that of glucose intolerance in a population with different patient, and to discuss the links uniting the two diseases. Two groups of patients on neuroleptics, namely 61 schizophrenics and 60 non-schizophrenics were compared. The prevalence of type II diabetes (19.7%) and that of glucose (31%) were statistically more significant in the schizophrenic patients than in the non-schizophrenic patients. There appeared to be a specific vulnerability to the onset of type II diabetes in schizophrenia and an aetiopathogenic substratum common to these two diseases.
