Area psychiatry and institutional psychotherapy were born approximately 60 years ago. Area psychiatry, which relies on its proximity and continuity, is practiced at the 6th sector of Abbeville – Adult Psychiatric Unit – Abbeville Hospital Center by the presence and a permanent care facility in a centralized location, and by the stability of its staff of professional caregivers. We associate cognitive remediation, on a group level, at this psychiatric unit to allow metacognitive, neurocognitive and social cognitive functions to work. These principles can be conceived and practiced using the basic framework of institutional psychotherapy and a psychoanalytical approach to psychoses. The principles of the adult psychiatric unit, psychosocial rehabilitation and cognitive remediation are therefore not in contradiction with each other but can instead easily function, while remaining faithful, at the same time, to their own basic framework.
