An observational study of the prescribing practices of lithium was realized in the Charles-Perrens hospital in Bordeaux, France. This study was planned from 1st to 5th March 2010.The aim of this work was to review the prescription practices of lithium to evaluate their adequacy with the guidance of use of this narrow therapeutic range drug. The secondary objective was to evaluate the tolerance of lithium, with a focus on its thyroid and renal toxicity. The study highlighted differences between clinical practices and guidelines, in particular in terms of lithium therapeutic drug monitoring. Our results show an increased risk of hypothyroidism and a tendency of decrease in creatinine clearance in patients treated for more than 3 years.
