We present a mental healthcare model, supported by the non-governmental organization Saint-Camille-de-Lellis. In Benin, this system has been set-up practically throughout the whole country in a manner similar to the French organizations in the same health sector. It is consistent with the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The model uses local human resources and international volunteers. Also, it is financed by private donations. We wanted to show how a local initiative has made it possible to establish an accessible, sustainable and effective psychiatric care facility on the country's level, in a difficult environment marked by extreme poverty and in the absence of social protection without any state intervention.
