Past and present Body Art.From the 1960s on, and especially in the 1970s, a new trend emerged – christened body art – which broke with the tendencies of the art world. During the course of happenings or collective, participative and provocative performances, artists used their bodies in scenes of mutilation and suffering, as a medium or a basis for their action. The ideological denunciation of social violence which was present in the early days has since been largely abandoned by artists who have turned to embrace more individual performances, directed at modern media and testifying more to the expression of personal problems.
