In this paper, Unafam (National union of families and friends of the sick and or mentally handicapped) refers to the recent questioning movement with regard to whether or not to use seclusion and restraint. This subject is still very taboo in France, despite the fact that many experiments carried out abroad show that these practices can be limited or suppressed. Unafam calls for the setting-up of a good practices protocol in services, allowing good prevention to avoid the use of these practices, respect of the patient's dignity, the establishment of a national observatory for restraint and liberties in psychiatry, which collects data from institutional registers and regularly publishes the analysis, and encourages the abandonment of isolation and restraint.
