The mobile team specialized in psychiatry (EMSP) of the Reunion Island Public Mental Health Institution (EPSMR) was created in 2009. Its aim is to promote access and continuity of common law care for people suffering from psychiatric disorders in a situation of great social insecurity. The back-up assistance of the professional mobile teams is complementary. Nurses facilitate access to the appropriate care facilities. The psychiatrist and the psychologist train the social care participants to identify mental disorders at an early stage. The network coordinator helps to constantly maintain the link between the various social, medical and social health caregivers. A detailed description of the EMSP missions is presented in this article, as well as, an emergency situation which will permit to understand the relevance of their actions in a complex local socio-economic context subjected to the weakening of traditional community support units.
