Cytogenetic and molecular tools available today have shown the influence of genetic factors in the occurrence of psychiatric disorders such as autism or schizophrenia. However, understanding the mechanisms underlying these disorders are still incomplete, particularly because of difficulties in determining the exact nature of these disorders and the vast heterogeneity of etiologic factors. Yet, their knowledge is a prerequisite for genetic counseling given to families to assess the risk they pose to face this type of pathology.
