English version of our editorial policy

I. General considerations

Magnesium Research, the official organ of SDRM (the international Society for the Development of Research on Magnesium) publishes scientific contributions in magnesium research from all branches of life science and medicine. This includes all aspects of magnesium in biological systems from inorganic chemistry to biochemistry, physiology and pathology.

II. Preparation of manuscripts

Magnesium Research publishes original papers, short communications, review articles, technical notes, letters and commentaries. Papers are published in English. Submission of original papers implies that the work has not been published previously and is not intended for publication elsewhere (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis). Studies involving human subjects or animals should have been approved by an Institutional Review Board and must conform to accepted principles. Papers should be submitted with 1.5 line spacing and margins of at least 2 cm on each side. For reviewing facilities use line numbering on all pages of the manuscript.

Each manuscript is to be accompanied by a cover letter outlining the basic findings of the paper and their significance, providing the following information:

– The full name and address of the corresponding author (including telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address).

– The full title of the submitted paper.

– The type of paper (original paper, short communication, review, technical note, letter).

– A statement that all authors have contributed to, and read, the paper.

– A statement that the manuscript (including related data, figures and tables) has not been previously published and that the manuscript is not under consideration elsewhere.

– A statement of disclosure of financial conflict of interest for all authors.

In most cases the manuscript will include:

– Title page. This will give the full title, a running title, the authors’ names (including first forename), places of work, with full postal addresses, key words for indexing purposes, and address for correspondence and reprints. Authors should also include telephone, fax and e-mail, presented in international format.

Text. This will comprise: Abstract and Key words, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion and Acknowledgements. Results should be described succinctly and the discussion should relate the results to present knowledge in the field. Non-standard abbreviations must be defined in the text when first mentioned. Any financial interests or conflicts of interest should be stated in the Acknowledgements section.

References. References should be entered consecutively by Arabic numerals in square brackets in the text. At the end of the paper, starting on a separate sheet, references should be numbered and listed in the order in which they first occur in the text. All authors should appear in a complete list, and never be replaced by et al. Authors of unpublished work not in press are included in the text only.

The following information is required:

• Book: Bowes & Church’s food values of portions commonly used. 1998; 17th edn. revised by J.A.T. Penningon, 1-481. Philadelphia: Lippincott.

• Book Chapter: Durlach J, Bara M. Magnésémie plasmatique ou sérique. In: Le magnésium en biologie et en médecine. J. Durlach and M. Bara, eds, 2nd ed. Cachan: EM Inter, 2000; 46-50, 55.

• Journal article: Weissberg N, Schwartz G, Shemesh O, Beooks BA, Algur N, Eylath U, Abraham AS. Serum and intracellular electrolytes in patients with and without pain. Magnes Res 1991; 4: 49-52.

Tables and illustrations. Show in the margin of the text where tables and figures should appear. Check consistency, e.g. of units, with text and other illustrations and tables. Refer to source of data. Simplify footnotes. Use Arabic numerals. Tables: Set out tables using generous space without dividing rules, at the end of the manuscript. Give each table a caption and supply headings for each column and part of each table, so that tables are comprehensible without reference to the text. Avoid duplicating data. Refer as table 1 or (table 1) in text, not Table 1 or Tab 1. Illustrations: Place these at the end rather than within the text with a separate sheet or sheets for captions. All illustrations will be scanned electronically for direct reproduction (unless provided digitally by the author), thus care must be taken when preparing artwork for publication. The name of the first author and abbreviated title must be written legibly on the back in pencil. Number all illustrations in a single sequence (figure 1, figure 2). Photographs: Send glossy prints without heavy marks on the back. Number lightly in pencil; show in pencil or on an overlay any portions to be omitted. All line illustrations should be of good quality and presented as clear black and white artwork, on paper with suitable contrast enabling them to be scanned. Any lettering which is included must be clearly presented by an accepted method. It is important that lettering, shading, tints, symbols (e.g. data points), curves and axes are prepared so that they are legible after any reduction the dimensions of the journal may necessitate in the course of publication.

Units and abbreviations. Preferably, give measurements of energy in kilojoules or megajoules with kilocalories in parentheses (1 kcal = 4.186 kJ). Alternatively kcal may be used with Joules in parentheses. Use metric units (SI units) as fully as possible. Very common abbreviations need not be defined, but generally on first using an abbreviation place it in parentheses after the full term. Note these abbreviations: gram, g; milligram, mg; microgram, μg; millilitre, mL; mole, mol (also mmol, mmol, etc); centimetre, cm; international unit, i.u.; milliequivalent, mEq; kilojoules, kJ; megajoules, MJ; weight, wt. Do not add‘s’ for plural units.

III. Address for the submission of contributions

Contributions should submitted online at:

https://mrh.manuscriptmanager.net

Preferable word processing format for the initial submission is as a Microsoft Word file. For authors without internet access paper submission requires four copies of the manuscript (1 original + 3 copies) with four sets of illustrations (one of which is the original). In addition, authors are requested to supply a copy of their manuscript on two discs (PC) which must match the final/accepted version of their manuscript, including tables and references, but excluding figures or graphics files (which may, nonetheless be submitted separately in electronic form), all clearly marked with format and software used.

Types of papers that can be submitted for consideration by the Editorial Board include:

a) Original research articles imply original work in clinical and experimental magnesium research. Such manuscripts should not exceed 4000 words and should have no more than 5 figures and tables in total. Abstract should not exceed 250 words.

b) Review Articles and Reviews published as “Recent Advances and opinions in Magnesium Research”, usually by invitation. Authors who desire submit an uninvited review article must first consult with the Editor-in-Chief before submitting a manuscript.

c) Short Communications. These papers should provide concise and complete accounts of significant findings of a more limited scope. The papers should be usually less 5-7 pages (1.5 spaced typed) including figures, tables and references. Abstract should not exceed 200 words.

d) Letters to the Editor should not exceed two pages and must deal with points raised in a recent article or present an original finding in a succinct form. They are published without abstract.

e) Announcements of meetings, workshops, courses etc.; subject to available space. Where a manuscript exceeds space limits, the Editor may either request abbreviation of the text or, in the case of a paper of particular interest, accept the publication of justified extra pages free of charge. Alternatively, the Editor and author may agree that extra pages be included at the author’s cost.

IV. Permissions

In the event where some of the illustrations are owned by third parties, the author undertakes to obtain the necessary permissions from the latter to include the illustrations in the article and the distribution thereof in this form. Manuscript must be accompanied by written permission for publication.

V. Presentation and circulation of manuscripts

The presentation of each manuscript should be in strict observance of the directions to contributors and of the quality criteria of peer-reviewed biomedical journals (see: Editorial Policy of Magnesium Research: General considerations on the quality criteria for biomedical papers and some complementary guidelines for the contributors of Magnesium Research; Magnes Res 1995; 8: 191–206. When a manuscript requires modification suggested by the Referees and/or by the Editor, the corrected manuscript (with the corresponding changes underlined and/or highlighted in the corrected manuscript) should be sent back together with detailed answers to the Referees and to the Editor. Final revisions must be in Word, WordPerfect or other acceptable word-processing program, either as email attachments, CD-ROM or disk.

VI. Proofs

A PDF proof for correction, with a purchase order for offprints and a disclosure form, will be sent to the corresponding author before publication. At this stage only typographical errors may be corrected free of charge. Cost of any alterations and additions will be charged to the author. Authors are responsible for careful check of proofs for errors.

VII. Page charges

Every corresponding author will be asked to pay 100 euros charges for an article of 5 pages or less, and 150 euros for a longer article. The authors of invited articles will not be required to pay any charges. The form will be sent together with the proofs.

Editorial acceptance is not contingent on publication charge support.

Page charges may be waived or reduced at the discretion of the editors in cases in which research funds are not available. Written statement of why the charges cannot be paid must be provided to the editorial office at the time the paper is submitted.

Authors may ask to have their articles freely available in the online version of the journal (open access); this will be charged at an extra 700 €.
