Heparin‐induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a clinicopathologic syndrome caused by platelet‐activating antibodies that recognize complexes of platelet factor 4‐heparin. Its strong association with venous and arterial thrombosis represents a striking paradox. Thrombocytopenia is common in clinical medicine and its etiology constitutes a difficult diagnosis problem in patients already treated by heparin particularly in critical care medicine, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. This text summarizes the recommandations of a group of experts on HIT devoted to help the biologists and clinicians concerned with this difficult syndrome.
