Background: Low back pain (LBP) represents the first cause of activity limitation in the world, a major medical, social and economic health problem. A written information for patients with acute LBP can be a support for them to adjust their beliefs related to fear and avoidance attitudes, and also help them to improve their functional abilities.

Methods: A qualitative study was conducted to investigate patients' concerns (expectations, fears and beliefs) on acute LBP. The information leaflet was developed to respond to these concerns. It was based on a review of scientific data of the French Health Authorities. An initial version was tested with 11 patients who had participated in the preliminary qualitative study and by 12 healthcare professionals (6 academic GPs, 2 academic rheumatologists, 2 physiotherapists and 2 osteopaths). The readability level of the text was evaluated by using a Kandel test.

Results: The leaflet consists of three sheets: 1/ Diagnosis, causes and prognosis of common acute LBP, 2/Treatment, 3/ Prevention of relapse. The document was improved according to comments from the patients and physicians, especially through the clarification of medical terms and the removal of disputed advice. The Kandel score was 77.8.

Conclusion: This leaflet represents a support for GPs and their patients suffering from common acute LBP, in addition to oral information.
