Background. There are settlements of doctors in liberal general practice only after the thesis. However, interns in general medicine are not opposed to this form of exercise. The objective of this study was to identify factors favoring private practice. Method. A qualitative study was conducted by group interviews (for interns in general practice) and individual (for GPs recently settled) in Rhône-Alpes. The study was conducted in search of maximum variation, following an interview guide, and up to saturation. Results. 9 doctors and 28 interns were enrolled between April and December 2012. The analysis revealed five themes: the role of ambulatory training for decision-making and technical training, the enriching experience of replacements for the choice of the type of exercise, the importance of personal history and family projects, the wish to have a flexible and diversifiable medical group practice, and eventually, the interesting role of the family physician, playing a role in health on the territory. Discussion. These themes make the settlement possible if there is an opportunity. Among these factors, many may serve as a basis for interventions in education, and must be present during the studies to promote the culture of settlement in future generalists.
