a I joined the department of dermatology run by Prof. S. Jablonska as a medical student, in the ’70. The department was renowned as an excellent, international level research centre. Despite difficult times in Poland, I could frequently go abroad for dermatological conventions such as the AAD and ESDR. It was amazing to me to meet so many friendly leaders of that time, such as Professors O. Braun-Falco, G. Orth, EH. Beutner, R. Cormane, K. Wolff, S. Katz, A. Kligman, E. Christophers, to cite just a few. My mission to revive links with the department led by Prof. J. Thivolet resulted, eventually, to my expatriation to France. This was at the time of the “state of war”, imposed on Poland following the crackdown on the “Solidarity” movement. My decision to move was largely motivated by the prospect of successfully continuation of my research in Lyon, which appeared to be compromised in Warsaw at that time. Despite administrative obstacles, Stephanie Jablonska and I have kept in touch and our professional relationship has evolved towards friendship.
