A 66-year-old housewife, with no previous medical history, presented with an asymptomatic bright red-purple plaque with well-defined raised borders on the left thumb (figure 1A). It had spread centrifugally during the past two weeks and the patient remained otherwise well, with no other local or systemic symptoms.
