Topical antibiotics and erythromycin in particular are extensively used in the treatment of the inflammatory component of acne, either alone or in combination with systemic treatment. Their efficacy is essentially linked to antibacterial activity on Propionibacterium acnes, a microorganism involved in the development of acne, and to a lesser degree Staphylococcus epidermidis.
