In 1973, the pulmonologist Saunders T. Frank, in a letter to the editor published in the New England Journal of Medicine, described the diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) as an oblique linear fold, clearly visible to the naked eye, which extends from the tragus up to the posterior edge of the pinna without continuity [1].
