After a brief description of the Senegal groundnut basin, the authors present the results of a 6 year research-development program carried out in an experimental station and on small village farms. Different animal and crop speculations offering sufficient incomes are defined according to rainfall and farming systems. The agronomical results, rainfall geographical distribution and soil aptitudes allow, by means of a geographical information system, a map of the basin’s agro-ecological areas to be drawn up. The map accurately defines the best adapted farming systems both ensuring a viable income and protecting the natural environment.
