Depression is a recurrent and often chronic disorder, sometimes resistant. It is a major health problem. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most used products among the antidepressants. All the SSRIs have a great selectivity for serotonin reuptake, sertralin is the most powerful, citalopram the most selective; on monoamine receptors, slight differences exist. On pharmacokinetic plane, the most differences are observed on the metabolism. Except for a longer delay of action with fluoxetine vs others SSRIs, no difference was reported in the overall efficacy and tolerability. Despite a large homogeneity, practical guidelines can be overviewed.
