Peer support worker is an emerging profession with an already well-developed professional identity, with well-defined requirements and training.

Peer support workers are professionals who use their experience as recovered psychiatric patients. All have personal experience with mental health issues, the impact that these issues have on daily life, and society's often-stigmatizing attitude toward mental health issues.

Peer support workers must complete a degree in health and social sciences.

This article outlines the basic features of this developing profession.
